PLANO, TX – Van Taylor, Plano State Representative and Republican nominee for Texas Senate District 8, today released the following statement in response to the burgeoning crisis on our southern border.
“Washington politicians need to look no further than the events currently unfolding on our southern border as reason to fully reject amnesty. An unprecedented wave of illegal crossings is overwhelming the U.S. Border Patrol leaving our state vulnerable to drug cartels, human traffickers, disease, and potential terrorist threats. Entering our nation with the hope of unilateral amnesty from President Obama, the Department of Homeland Security estimates 90,000 unaccompanied minors could be apprehended this year alone, and that number could grow to 142,000 in 2015. The 2014 estimate is up more than 3 times from just last year (24,000) and is 12 times greater than in 2011 (6,000-7,500), leaving our southern border in a state of humanitarian crisis.
We cannot wait for Washington. Texas must act immediately to secure our border. I join fellow conservative colleagues in calling on the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House to take any and all means necessary to secure our southern border, including the immediate allocation of state emergency resources to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and local law enforcement, and if necessary calling a special session.”
